A small collection of 19th-century natural history plates: hand-engraved illustrations of birds, monkeys, fish, and butterflies, drawn back when the only way to record what an animal looked like was to draw it carefully by hand. I keep them here because I like the mix of patient observation and real craft, and because they have aged into something worth looking at on their own.
